Recognition for Bright Talent

Gilkes Engineer Wins Pump Centre Young Engineer Award 2018

Gilkes Design Engineer Apprentice, Joe Boothroyd has been awarded the prestigious Young Engineers Award by the Pump Centre. The "Young Engineers Award - Apprentice Category" was presented to Joe at the Pump Centre Dinner earlier this month.

The award is aimed at young engineers working anywhere in the supply chain including End Users, Consultants, Contractors, Manufacturers and Component & Service Suppliers and is open to those engineers who have made a significant contribution to their company.

During the 4 month application process Joe was given the opportunity to show the Pump Centre judges and other professionals his knowledge of engineering and diligent approach. Now in his third year of his apprenticeship, Joe is a key member of the Technical Centre and Engineering team at Gilkes as well as recently completing his HNC, after being fast tracked to start a year early.

"Joe has unbounded enthusiasm in almost all that he has had to face since becoming part of the Technical Centre team. Very thankfully this enthusiasm is tempered with a degree of caution beyond his years. Joe has a thirst for engineering knowledge and absorbs the knowledge given quickly.

The Gilkes Technical Centre is a relatively new facility and we are all learning and being presented with new challenges; Joe embraces them all and is happy doing so. More widely, Joe's CAD skills have come on leaps and bounds so that he is not simply modelling fixtures for testing and creating drawings for the parts, he is frequently requested to do peer review of drawings within the wider Engineering department because of his diligent approach to the task." Martin Ives, ECP Senior Engineer, Gilkes.

Having a year left on his apprenticeship, Joe plans to spend time in other areas of the business, including production, assembly and inspection to gain a wider knowledge of the engineering process. Taking his engineering skills outside of work, Joes also builds his own bicycles, racing them in Regional Championships, showing he really does have a thirst for engineering. With Ambitions to become a design engineer and achieve a BEng Hons Degree, Joe is one of Gilkes rising talents.

Joe Said: "I am really pleased and proud to have won the Young Engineers Award. I have appreciated the chance to show the Pump Centre and other professionals outside of Gilkes my work and the work of Gilkes as a whole. The career path given to me by Gilkes I really do appreciate and so my hard work, I hope, does the opportunities Gilkes have given me, justice."
