Industries
Our products have continued to evolve over many years, maintaining the performance and durability expected by our customers and engine manufacturers. As expectations and legislation have shifted, bringing greater focus on efficiency and environmental responsibility, Gilkes has adapted. Our products continue to support engine applications across a wide range of operating conditions, from remote marine environments to high-altitude locations.
The largest part of our work involves supplying single and dual circuit pumps for diesel and gas power generation engines. Traditionally, separate jacket water and LTA or SCAC circuits were standard on many engines. Gilkes redefined this approach by combining both circuits into a single pump. This change simplified pipework, reduced weight and cost, and freed up engine drive connections, making our equipment a practical choice for new engine designs.

Our work in the marine engine cooling sector began in the early 1960s, where we developed a clear understanding of the reliability required for performance and safety at sea. Starting with high-horsepower commercial applications, we applied that knowledge to expand into midrange commercial and recreational engines, down to 4L. This was made possible by supplying auxiliary propulsion and power generation engines with dry-running and high-performance self-priming pumps – features long valued by our SOLAS and military customers. Our pumps deliver up to six times the service life of other products on the market, improving total cost of ownership for operators and end users.

Our experience across demanding engine environments led to success in the rail sector. Entry into this market in 2004 was enabled by advances in seal technology and the ability to align with the rail industry’s processes and standards. Operating conditions involving extreme temperatures and constant vibration challenged our design approach and sharpened our focus on selecting the right materials for long-term performance.

The mining and oil and gas engine markets demand longevity, reliability and minimal maintenance. Gilkes adapted simple centrifugal pumps through rigorous testing to meet these expectations in the field. Key focus areas included bearing design, seal performance and pump construction. Additional features were introduced to distinguish between critical and non-critical seal operating modes, supporting safer and more efficient operation.

Why choose Gilkes for engine cooling pumps?
Gilkes brings over 85 years of experience to the design and manufacture of engine cooling pumps, with a focus on performance, reliability and long-term value. Our solutions are trusted by engine builders across a wide range of sectors.
Flexibility in design and manufacture
We tailor pump configurations to suit each application, optimising flow, pressure and efficiency while supporting emissions control and weight reduction targets even in space-limited engine layouts. Single and dual-circuit cooling systems are available to match specific engine requirements.
Reliability by design
Our pumps are engineered with a focus on long bearing life and effective seal performance. Careful selection of oil and water seals, combined with robust materials, reduces wear, minimises failures and optimises operating hours.
Strong return on investment
Gilkes pumps are built to perform over the full product lifecycle. From initial operation to remanufacture, our designs aim to lower total cost of ownership by reducing maintenance, downtime and the need for early replacement.
Practical understanding of engine demands
We consider operational factors such as dry running, altitude, vibration, and coolant properties. This insight allows us to specify and build pumps that perform reliably in demanding conditions across diverse industries.
Close partnerships with engine builders
We work alongside our customers from the earliest design stages, providing tailored pump solutions that are integrated into wider engine systems. Our collaborative approach ensures each product meets the specific needs of the application.
Complete in-house capability
All stages of product development, from design and machining to assembly and testing, are managed in-house. This allows us to maintain strict quality standards and deliver consistent results across all pump models.
Material expertise
A detailed understanding of material behaviour allows us to specify combinations that withstand mechanical stress and environmental exposure. This ensures consistent pump performance across the full service life.
Advanced engineering tools
We use the latest analysis and simulation software to evaluate pump performance, allowing our team to optimise each design for efficiency and durability.
Lifecycle support
Beyond supply, we remain involved with ongoing technical support, spare parts, and refurbishment options. Our customers benefit from continuity of service and practical advice throughout the equipment’s lifetime.
