BHA Restoration Award 2023

Gilkes have won a second award for 2023.  The Historic Renovation Award presented to us at the British Hydropower Association Conference, is for our work on the New Lanark Mills Refurbishment project.

This award showcases the exceptional efforts in restoring and revitalizing historical hydropower sites.

Congratulations to the whole team at Gilkes who worked on this project and contributed to its success. A fitting end to a successful conference, shaping the future of British Hydropower.

The New Lanark Project

In 2020, Gilkes was awarded a contract to refurbish a 1931 Boving twin runner Francis turbine at a UNESCO World Heritage site, New Lanark Mills, Glasgow. Utilising 3D scanning and modern analysis tools such as FEA and CFD, Gilkes were able to reverse engineer the runner geometry by modernising aspects of the design with up-to-date materials and components, which improved performance and durability while maintaining the historic look and operation of the turbine. Following many additional hurdles which required ingenuity to overcome, the full refurbishment, removal, and installation of the 90-year-old turbine in an 18th Century building was completed in 2022.
