What is Accelerated Loss of Mains Change Programme (ALoMCP)?
The Accelerated Loss of Mains Change Programme (ALoMCP) is an industry-wide project run by the National Grid and Network Operators (DNOs). The aim of the programme is to update Loss of Mains (LoM) protection for renewable electricity generators such as wind turbines, hydro schemes and solar photovoltaics, to reduce the risks of needless tripping and loss of energy supply.
In the past, these generators have been fitted with Vector Shift (VS) protection, which trips in response to certain transmission or distribution faults. However, this protection has been recently proven to lead to spurious tripping of distributed generation and could go on to cause loss of power to large sections of the national grid. The ALoMC Programme aims to supply operators with new relays and systems under the latest G59 rules (Amendment 7), that removes Vector Shift and instead enables RoCoF protection (Rate of Change of Frequency), which protects against the same faults, but does not lead to wide spread grid issues.
As part of the new G59 rules, older generators connected under the previous G59 regulations must change their relay settings, or even change the relay if required, facing hefty fines if not compliant by September 2022.
It should be noted that even if you already have a G59 or even a G99* relay, you must ensure that your systems are configured correctly.
*G99 is applicable to new grid connections from April 2019
The ALoMCP is a nationally-funded project that offers the following grants:
- Up to £1,500 where protection function/relay deactivation and/or protection settings change is required.
- Up to £4,000 where a protection relay replacement is required.
These payments operate on a ‘first-come, first-served’ basis, and the funding is also time-sensitive. We therefore recommend acting fast!

- Window 2 – 13/11/19 – 11/02/20 (now closed)
- Window 3 – 12/02/20 – 12/05/20.
- Window 4 – 13/05/20 – 11/08/20.
You will be notified if your application has been successful approximately 1 month after the closing date, on receipt of this we can plan the engineers site work.
