Chatsworth House case study

Three ‘Gilkes Vortex’ turbines were commissioned in 1893, and between them they generated just under 90 kW – sufficient to meet the electrical need of the house for over 40 years. However in 1936 the turbines were phased out in favour of the National Grid. Over half a century later, the Estate began investigating the possibility of re-commissioning the turbines in order to reduce electricity costs.

Gayle Mill case study

In over 220 years Gayle Mill’s history has seen the mill fulfil numerous functions. Initially the mill was used as a cotton spinning mill, although, this was only for the first 20 years. It was subsequently used for the next 70 or 80 years to spin wool for the local hand-knitting industry. In the midst of this, it has been at the centre of the use of power produced from water using generations of Gilkes turbines.

Kinlochleven case study

The Kinlochleven scheme first produced aluminium in 1907, with completion of plant construction in 1909. Eleven Pelton turbines each drove two 250V DC generators to provide power for the smelting process. The new plant was installed in place of motor generator sets and generates 10MW of electrical power from a head of 278m at 100rpm.
