Kinlochleven Service and Refurbishment
The Francis turbines at Kinlochleven Power Station have proved to be very reliable since there commissioning. During routine maintenance it had been observed that the hydro dynamic shaft seal was wearing into the turbine shaft sleeve. Although the shaft sleeve is there to act as a sacrificial wearing components the wearing was effecting the performance of the shaft sleeve.
Replacement of the turbine shaft sleeve was not the preferred option as this would require the turbine to be substantially dismantled to enable replacement. After discussions with Belzona technical experts we opted to repair the damaged shaft sleeve with Belzona 1111 metal repairer, this was applied in situ to the turbine shaft and hand dressed to achieve the required surface finish.
This work was completed in 12 hours start to finish, had we had to dismantle the turbine to install a new shaft sleeve the work would have taken a full week and would have cost Rio-Tinto a considerable sum of money in down time.
