Balbeg Hydro is located on the north shire of Loch Tay, just off the A827. The scheme diverts water from Wester Burn, Main Burn and Chapel Burn into a 902m long penstock made from HDPE.
With a net head of 80m and a design flow of 151l/s, the 10.5” Single Jet Compact Turgo generates an electrical output of 91kW, taking advantage of the 15-100kW Feed In Tariff band.
The turbine is fitted with a water hydraulic actuator that utilises the penstock pressure to control the deflector in a failsafe manner.
The control system is built around a Gilkes Turbine Controller, a pre-programmed unit that provides all the functionality of a traditional PLC system at a reduced cost.
The system has been fitted with a 3G modem, allowing remote access to the control system from any internet enabled device.
Scope of Supply
Case, runner, bearing, housing, spear valve and actuator, deflector and actuator, branch pipe, shims and tools, main inlet valve, manual gate valve, induction generator, control panel, head level sensor, installation and commissioning of Gilkes supplied equipment.
